Letter to the editor — July 25, 2019

Dear editor,

As we approach this election, I watch with interest the race for mayor. While it is true I no longer work for the city, I still have many friends that serve the citizens of Iola selflessly, as well as family members that reside here.

It was while I worked there that I first heard a co-worker say, “Attitude reflects leadership.” This statement was true for law enforcement, but can apply to the office of mayor in a variety of ways.

If a mayor is selected that values only his own opinions and is condescending to any who disagree, this is what can be expected from the council as a whole. Those council persons who seek to have the checks and balances of government kept alive through healthy debate will eventually become worn down and seek a venue where they believe they can make a difference.

Equally, If you want employees who are committed to the citizens of Iola, then you must select a mayor who is committed to the citizens of Iola. When a candidate continues to call for the reduction of city employees and or emergency services, the question must be asked “Why?”

Has the candidate investigated this “need” with the people doing the job or only looked at numbers on paper?

Am I saying there is no fat anywhere in government that can be trimmed? No, but why hack with a machete when you can cut more precisely with a fillet knife?

Ultimately, I am writing this letter to provoke thought before you fill out a ballot.

Am I suggesting you vote for anyone specific? No. I am just asking that voters do their homework in researching the candidates thoroughly.

Respectfully,

Anthony Maness,

Iola, Kan.
