Dear editor,
The story about Mark Hastings retiring as ad manager at The Iola Register made me think of his father, Jack Hastings, who was my boss when I worked as an attendant at the 54 Drive-In, when it first opened in Gas City.
There was never a better boss than Jack Hastings. He treated all who worked for him with respect. And we respected him, and told other attendants we get our orders from Jack, and not anyone else.
It was an exciting time for a kid. We got 50 cents an hour. Iola Theatre and Uptown only paid 40 cents an hour at that time.
I enjoyed show business, like no other business! Shows were clean and contained no bad language or situations. There was kissing, though, to which we closed our eyes.
Jim Brownrigg,
Iola, Kan.
