Dear editor,
The Southwind Rail Trail volunteer crew have been so happy so many enjoy the trail and show courtesy in keeping the trail clean for everyone, including the landowners who are in close proximity all along the trail. This trail is known through Facebook, word of mouth, and rail trail media for being a well groomed, relaxing, family-friendly trail.
Recently, however, there have been a couple of single track/mountain bike trails cleared south of the Elm Creek Bridge which cause some concern for safety since they are very steep. Some of us enjoy mountain bike trails and are happy to have them on the Lehigh Trail; however, they pose a problem off the Southwind. Inexperienced riders may not be ready for the incline/decline nor the abrupt turn at either end which could also be hazardous, with riders zooming onto the trail where others may be biking or hiking. Another concern is that single track trails may begin to be showing up further south where landowners, understandably, DO NOT want trespassing.
We are blessed to have two wonderful trails here on the south side of Iola. The Lehigh is beautiful and has some opportunities to challenge riders. The Southwind is also beautiful and offers a quiet, easy riding/hiking/running experience.
Please discourage any off-trail riding on the Southwind.
Thank you! Be safe, and enjoy the trails!
