Letter to the editor — May 15, 2013

Dear editor,
When it comes right down to it, I could go either way on the annexation of Country Estates. I have lived out here for 35 years.
There is just a couple of things I would like to address. There is only one sewage lift station out here, it’s in my back yard. It occasionally gives trouble. I’m told it is being replaced by a brand new one.
The streets are fine out here. The county does a wonderful job of keeping them up. Duane (McGraw) was correct about our rural water district. It definitely needs some more volunteers. We basically have one person that keeps it in the black, and that is David Donovan. He does a wonderful job. As far as it getting water to us, it also works fine.
I’m sure most of the people in Iola don’t know where their water meters are. As far as Iola being good neighbors, I would think that if they take us in they are no longer our neighbors.
The county does a magnificent job of removing our snow every winter. I know the neighborhood streets of the city do not get the same attention.
I don’t believe it’s worth it to annex us just to say you have a couple of hundred more people in the city. At the rate you are losing them, in a few years it will all be for naught.
I do know our electric rates would go down, that’s a plus. So do what you want, I’m good either way. Just don’t do it to be doing it.
Don Erbert,
Iola, Kan.
