Letter to the editor — July 2, 2018

I am trying so hard to get my blood pressure under control, but find it difficult when even The Register continues to print slander — not just on the Opinion Page but on the front page and elsewhere.

The most recent example: I have been unable to find ANY verification of the claim that “children are being held in cages at the border” and yet this apparent lie appears yet again — on the front page. A picture taken and published in 2014, FOUR YEARS AGO, is what has been shamelessly used as “evidence” for it happening currently. Please! I have as much sympathy as anyone for those who are legitimately at the border seeking asylum. However, the vast majority of those being detained at the border are not there out of fear for their lives. Asylum is obviously available in Mexico. Most are not even interested in becoming American citizens. If they were, they would not be trying to enter this country illegally. Yes, immigration laws need to be changed — should have been changed long ago!!! But until they are changed, they must be followed, otherwise the situation will continue to deteriorate. Do we really want to keep on down the road of “oh, let’s just be nice and let everyone do whatever they want (just so long as it isn’t hurting/inconveniencing ‘me’, that is)!” Caring for the genuine “orphans and widows” — the helpless and oppressed — starts with telling “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

Sincerely,

Jean E. Anderson
