Letter to the editor — July 30, 2014

Dear editor:
Chad VanHouden’s comments to the Iola Register that he wouldn’t know the Koch brothers if they crossed the street was probably a true statement. They are a very private family, and they hire other people to do their work for them.
Then he went on to deny Kent Thompson’s claim that he was in the Koch brothers’ hands. He is either very green to politics or just plain dumb making such a claim.
He was very proud to say the Kansas Chamber of Commerce was his main backer. Anyone in politics knows they are led by Mike O’Neil, who is a paid lobbyist for the Koch brothers. They are the one who submits the names to the Kochs’ Prosperity For America and who they back. Chad is correct they personally don’t know who he or Kent are, and they don’t care as long as they think he will vote in their agendas.
They sent out a postcard with their return address in the left hand corner of Kent with a picture of a pig saying Kent liked pork spending. The reference to pork was Kent voted for wind energy. The Kochs don’t sell wind; they just blow it.
As an Allen County taxpayer, I thought Kent and the commissioners did a very good job of keeping the taxes at a reasonable level. They also claimed he voted for Obamacare. This was a federal law, not a state law. More false claims.
The Kochs recently had a secret meeting in California, where they raised $70 million. They had security with guys with ear pieces talking to their watches, keeping out the press.
There were four governors and several senators seen, and a huge bunch of rich donors in attendance. They plan on spending $470 million between now and the 2016 elections.
We will be forced to watch non-stop TV ads making false claims. It’s no wonder we think all politicians in both parties are liars and crooks.
Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and two large donors were overheard saying they would rather give our money to the Kochs than the RNC (Republican National Committee) because you get a lot more bang for your buck. I wonder what kind of legislation he wants to change to pad his pocket.
After watching the video of the Chanute Chamber of Commerce’s forum on the Chanute Tribune’s website, Kent Thompson is a hands-down best choice for the 9th District state representative.
