Dear editor,

To the owners in the Chanute area who left a beautiful purebred black cocker spaniel:

I saw her at daybreak, running up the driveway toward the veterinarian clinic where I work on Mondays. She was cold, hungry and, most of all, afraid. Her hair was filthy and matted. When I approached her, she ran away.

Several hours later, I saw her again and I was ready, armed with canned dog food and treats. She still ran away, but after several more attempts, I gained her trust.

She followed me into a fenced area where my co-worker was able to close the other gate. The dog let me touch her. She ravenously ate and drank and I was able to carry her inside the clinic and put her in a kennel. She looked petrified.

As the day progressed, she began to snarl and snap at anyone who approached her cage.

When I inquired about this dog the next day, I learned she had been euthanized. Her fear and suffering had overcome her. She would not allow any human to help save her.

If only the owners who dumped her could know what eventually happened to this black cocker spaniel.
