Letter to the editor — June 4, 2018

Dear editor,

I don’t think it’s right to complain about an officer of the law just doing his job. It was not his fault that the wheels that came up with the plan for this detour never thought to order the signs to warn travelers saying it was for local travel only. We don’t know what Mr. Van Meteren said to the deputy. It is not wise to get lippy with the law. He thought that Iola and Humboldt should be thankful for the extra people coming through town. Most of the ones I have seen are just in a hurry to get on by. The revenue gained from the few that do stop will not come close to paying for the extra work that will need to be done from the extra traffic. These lawmen put their lives on the line every day to protect us and all we do is complain. It is just not right. Zip it.

Maude Burns,

Iola, Kan.
