Letter to the editor — May 16, 2020

Dear editor,

I want to give a big shout-out to all the doctors, nurses, and other medical people for their dedication and skills in the course of this pandemic. You are truly patriots in the ongoing war against this plague.

The leaders of our state and the country also deserve our shout-outs, praise, and respect as they are required to make decisions during this crisis. Rather than attempting to find fault with these leaders, we should be supporting them.

The biggest impediment to achieving any worthwhile progress lies in all the political positioning on both sides. At the national level people attempt to smear and destroy the efforts of the Trump administration to combat this pandemic. At the state level we have people finding fault with the programs put forth by Governor Laura Kelly and her administration.

Kelly and Trump are both working toward a common goal, though maybe not exactly the same methods. No previous administrations in recent years have faced such a crisis. Of course, there may be some mistakes along the way as they learn what is best and seek to improve their strategies.

Something else that is pretty sad to see is people who are not on the frontlines spewing negativity and disparagement on the efforts of our state and national leaders when they have no more experience with the Covid-19 pandemic than the leaders.

Let’s work together to support their efforts, whatever their political persuasion, instead of running on about how this or that is wrong simply because Trump or Kelly doesn’t happen to be the “right” political affiliation.

Both Republicans and Democrats are guilty of this political posturing and it is tearing this country apart.

Sincerely,

Bob Lamb,

Iola, Kan.
