Letter to the editor — Jan. 26, 2024

Dear editor,

We wish to express our concerns regarding the City of Iola’s plan to establish a recycling service.

While we understand the importance of recycling and its positive impact on the environment, we feel that it may not be the most feasible option for our community at this time.

Many residents in Iola are currently facing financial hardships, struggling to make ends meet. Each month, they are forced to make difficult choices about which bills to prioritize, often compromising their basic needs like food and medicine.

To gauge the level of interest in a recycling service, we suggest conducting a survey along with the next utility bill. This way, residents can volunteer to contribute an additional $15 per month towards this non-essential service.

We believe you will find that only a small number of people will be willing to participate. Instead, we urge you to prioritize the existing services and ensure their efficient functioning before burdening the citizens of Iola with another financial obligation.

Thank you for considering our perspective. We believe it is essential to address the immediate needs of our community before embarking on new initiatives.

Sincerely,
Terry and Susie Call,
Iola, Kan.
