Letter to the editor – April 11, 2020

Dear editor,

With this virus, social distancing is important. Here’s some tips that may help.

Eat a lot of garlic. It’s good for you and people will stand back.

You could cook up a big pot of beans, eat a big bowl and when you go out, don’t hold back. That’ll clear a crowd.

Onions work good, too.

This virus is serious, but a little laughter helps. Now is also a good time to pray. The best doctors in the world are working to find a cure and they will find it just as they did with polio. With the new technology we have maybe it won’t take as long.

Back in 1940 my folks had sent my brother and me to the neighbors on an errand. The parents were taking their son to the doctor, not knowing he had contracted polio. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

When those parents found out the reason for his illness, they drove over to tell our folks. They were really worried we would contract it. We were taken to the doctor, who said all they could do was wait and watch for the symptoms of sore muscles and a fever and then we would need to be hospitalized.

Fortunately, that never happened and a vaccine was finally discovered in 1955.

Take care,

Maude Burns,

Iola, Kan.
