President Donald Trumps candor Monday night was nothing short of endearing.
How would I look walking a dog on the White House lawn? he asked the crowd.
For those who could conjure up the image, Mr. Trump shot it down with some refreshing honesty.
I dont know. I dont feel good. Feels a little phony, phony to me.
Besides, Mr. Trump said, I dont have any time, for such constitutionals, which is a little hard to swallow considering all the hours of executive time he has scheduled in his day to watch TV.
Ever since he assumed office, Mr. Trump has been criticized for not having a dog. Hes the first president in 120 years to do without.
For someone so attuned to visuals, Mr. Trump must see their value as a prop. Soft and furry. Slobbery.
And the president certainly could appreciate the loyalty dogs so readily provide.
Even so, he defers.
WE AMERCIANS love dogs. More than 60 million U.S. households have at least one, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, up almost 30 percent in the last decade.
But, if youre not into pets, or dogs in particular, its nothing to be ashamed of.
Besides, in President Trumps case, Bella would be able to detect the set-up a mile off and before we know it, would be trailing Melania. Or Kellyanne.
How embarrassing.
So good for President Trump for dropping any pretense for pets.
