Don’t mess with tradition, make those resolutions

We’re not sure where 2018 went but we’re not sorry to see it go.

Nearly every day brought jaw-dropping, eye-rolling confusion causing us to ask where humanity is headed.

But, it’s nearly gone and we’re about to start seeing on social media the clichés: “New year, new me,” “My time to shine,” “A year of me” and of course “Out with the old, in with the new.”

Each year about this time we think about what our New Year’s resolutions should be. Apparently this is a practice that has been around since the Romans and we have to wonder if it works for anyone. It’s great to sit down, evaluate yourself and make changes as you see fit.

But, does anyone actually keep New Year’s resolutions? If you do, congratulations you have this adulting figured out.

Even though it’s something we usually fail at, it is tradition and we know you don’t monkey with tradition.

So, we decided we’d put together our 2019 resolutions anyway. (Side note, we nearly wrote stop procrastinating and then decided it was time to get real — easy — with our resolutions so we went another way.) We’ve come up with resolutions we will actually keep and you’re welcome to join in with us.

• Read. Read at least one book in 12 months that isn’t required for school, work or a professional project.

• Go to the doctor. We’re all pretty good about going when we’re sick, but we tend to push off those routine maintenance checkups and we shouldn’t.

• Forgive. Forgive yourself and whomever else you need to. It’s just dead weight and who needs any more of that?

• Unfollow. It’s OK to unfollow those negative people online. Just because social media has taken over our lives it does not mean you have to allow it to be filled with negativity because the person doing it is your cousin twice removed. Bye-bye.

• Be kind. Be kind — in big ways and small ways and any way you can — always.

• Sleep. Take more naps. If you look down on these afternoon siestas, you clearly haven’t experienced the bliss of waking after the sun has gone down and being sure it was the next day and you’re late for work/school. Those are always the best sleeps and who couldn’t use more quality sleep?

• Experiment. Do something different — we don’t care what, but add something to your life this year you’ve been putting off. As Robin S. Sharma said, “Don’t live the same year 75 times and call it a life.” Get out there and experience something new.

So with an enthusiastic wave we say goodbye to 2018 and are ready to crush our 2019 resolutions.
