7 — The biggest winner in Tuesday’s election was the Iola Middle School bond issue. Jerry Skidmore won a seat on the City Commission; Linda Sigg and Chuck Apt were given seats on the USD 257 Board of Education; and Delbert Nelson, Gary McIntosh and Ed Lind won the Allen County Community College Board of Trustees contest. Larry Manion was elected mayor of Humboldt and Jerry Wallis was elected mayor of Moran.

8 — Bill King is the new director of public works for Allen County. King, a transplanted Missourian, said he wants county employees to keep their equipment clean and to work at serving Allen Countians as well as possible.

12 — The Iola High Mustangs claimed the championship in the Class 4A competition at the Wichita State Relays Friday. Kevin Jukes placed first and set a meet record in the 400-meter dash in 50.8 seconds; ran on the gold medal 4 x 100-meter team with Webb Mechling, Mike Johnson and Brad Walden; and the gold medal 4 x 800-meter relay team with David Williams, Chris Cason and Mike Marshall. Cason, Mechling, Jukes and Curtis Neuenswander won the silver medal in the 4 x 400-meter relay. Mechling won the gold medals in the 100- and 200 meter dashes. Justin Faulhaber claimed the gold medal in the 3200-meter run and the silver medal in the 1600-meter run. Cason placed second in the 800-meter run and Williams placed third.

15 — MORAN — For the first time in Marmaton Valley High School history, the FFA chapter will have one of its members, Jason Botts, serve as president of the Southeast Kansas FFA District.

19 — The first Operation Immunize weekend in Allen County will be observed Saturday. The immunization clinic for children ages birth to 2 years will be run by volunteers under the leadership of Karen Gilpin and Lucille Hillbrant.
