Iola moved a step closer Tuesday to a comprehensive recreation program with a full-time director. City commissioners and a handful of proponents listened for an hour while Steve Friend, Burlington recreation director, and Ron Maring, who directs recreation in Osawatomie, talked about their programs and answered questions. At the conclusion, commissioners agreed to form a steering committee to outline what should be done in Iola and create a job description for a director.

A surprisingly severe storm, packing winds of 60 mph and heavy rain, darted into Iola Wednesday afternoon. Trees fell into the 69,000-volt KGE transmission lines cutting off power citywide for almost four hours. Damage to McKinley Elementary Schools roof made it necessary to bus 120 students to the Iola Middle School where they will attend classes while the roof is being repaired. Classrooms on the second floor of Jefferson Elementary School were also damaged.
