Deanna Erbert and Marguerite Hackney left yesterday for Washington, D.C., where Deanna will enter a paper in the National Committee on Employment of the Physically Handicapped contest. Miss Erberts entry won first in the Kansas contest in March. Miss Hackney is the teacher-sponsor for the contest at Iola High School.

The elegant McClure home at 523 S. Washington is being razed. It was built by William Henry Harrison McClure in 1882 and has been a landmark of old Iola since that time. Miss Julia McClure, who was a toddler when the home was built, remembers many things about Iolas early days with clarity.

District Judge Spencer A. Gard was honored Friday by the alumni of the University of Kansas School of Law for his distinguished career as a jurist and scholar. He was presented with a citation as a distinguished alumnus of the law school … whose life has benefited mankind and whose noteworthy contributions through the years have brought honor to the school of law. One graduate of the law school is singled out each year for the citation.

Debra Dene Barnes of Moran, Miss America 1968, returns next week to the beauty pageant which started her on the road to the Miss America Crown. She will attend the third annual Miss Pittsburg State Pageant in Carney Hall May 14 and 15 and, along with the current queen, crown the new Miss Pittsburg State.

Herk Russell III was named outstanding Iola athlete for the 1967-68 school year at the annual All-Sports banquet. The other six were Garold Ensley, John Voisinet, Dave McGuffin, Brent Wright, Wayne Coblentz and Greg Kretzmeier.
