11 Iola Middle School has been chosen as one of five in Kansas to participate in a pilot program that could change the way physical education is taught at the middle school level, Merryl McRae, a PE teacher at IMS, said. The program, labeled the Physical Activity and Health/Wellness Curriculum program, will begin with the 1998-99 school year in the fall.

12 An alternative high school will begin next fall for at-risk students in the school district. The USD 257 board approved the initiative Monday night and appointed Mary Lacy as the schools director.

15 Tony Leavitt is the new plant manager at Herff-Jones. Employees were told Thursday that Leavitt, who has worked at the local diploma and yearbook cover printing plant since it opened more than 25 years ago, will replace Bob Hessel.

Barry Worley and Larry Colcher photographed the Seven Arch Bridge east of Humboldt Thursday for the Kansas State Historical Society. The bridge, which is about a century old, will be removed to make way for a new one.

18 An Iola High School senior class of 108 members received diplomas Sunday in the 119th annual commencement exercises. Joseph Cunningham, Keil J. Regehr and Glenna Yokum were named valedictorian recipients while Jeffrey Wolfe was named salutatorian.
