Wayne Marlin Mitchell, 65, Osawatomie, passed away peacefully in his sleep Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
He was born April 30, 1952, in Chanute, to Elvyn Ellis and Anna Delphine (Daniels) Mitchell. He grew up in LaHarpe, and graduated from Iola High School in 1970. He served in the Air Force, Kansas Army National Guard, and the U.S. Navy, totaling 21 years of service to his country. He served through various conflicts around the world, and retired in 1991. He worked as an investigator in Washington, D.C., and then for the postal service in human resources in Richmond, Va., until he retired.
Wayne enjoyed fishing, camping, antiquing, collecting firearms, and spending time with his family. He was Sr. Vice Commander of Tall City VFW Post 7208, 2nd Vice Commander of Tall City American Legion Post 119, and was a member of American Legion Post 15 in Iola, and the United Methodist Church in Osawatomie.
He is survived by brothers Loren Mitchell and wife Bobbie, Iola, and Carl Lee Mitchell, Welda; sisters, Theda Pentlin, Wellsville, and Linda Simpson, Osawatomie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Melvyn Mitchell and Thomas H. Mitchell.
His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 U.S 54, Iola. Visitation will be the evening prior from 6 to 8 o’clock, also at the funeral home.
