Wanda C. Summers, 87, Pittsburg, formerly of Iola, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.
She was born Aug. 15, 1928, in Wirt, Okla., the daughter of Roy F. and Roberta (Henry) Thompson. She was a 1946 graduate of Healdton High School in Oklahoma.
Wanda had been a resident of the Pittsburg area for the past 18 months moving there from Iola, where she had lived since 1971.
She married Robert E. Summers on Dec. 31, 1950 in Wichita Falls, Texas; he preceded her in death on April 10, 2001.
After graduating from high school, Wanda attended business school in Wichita Falls and began working in the offices of Magnolia Petroleum Corporation (now Mobil Oil) in southern Oklahoma. Wanda worked for most of her life in various capacities but the joy of her working career was her most recent position as a para-educator for special needs pre-school children in Iola. She worked there for nearly 24 years, until she was close to 84 years old, and loved and always talked about her “kids” at the pre-school.
Wanda enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting and especially taking care of her “baby,” her little Maltese, Molly. She had a wonderful and surprising sense of humor.
She was a life-long member of the Church of Christ, most recently in Pittsburg.
Survivors include three sons, Craig Summers (Catherine) of Baxter Springs, Jeff Summers, Wichita, Bryan Summers (Michelle), Bend, Ore.; two daughters, Cathy Reed (Grant), Mulberry, and Cindy Summers, Wichita; five grandchildren, Stephen Johnson, Jesse, Sunny, Samuel and Madison Summers; three great-grandchildren, Riley and Maya Johnson and Simon Summers. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, Barbara Camp.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Pittsburg with Phillip Crown officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service Monday at the church. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Griffin-Hillcrest Cemetery in Ardmore, Okla. Condolences can be sent to www.bathnaylor.com.
