Walter Allen Jones, 91, LaHarpe, joined his wife Arlene in heaven on Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, at Arrowood Lane in Humboldt.
He was born Aug. 23, 1926, to Elmer and Fern (Searcy) Jones at their home near LaHarpe. He lived on farms north and south of Moran. He attended Mildred High School. He worked on his folks’ farm and rode his bicycle to help on the neighbor’s farm. He worked for McAdam Construction, operating bulldozers and graders.
He married Arlene Jarred Jan. 1, 1948, while she taught school. They lived in Iola on Second Street. Walter was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He attended artillery training in Louisiana before being shipped to Japan, where they were in need of medics. He trained for a couple of weeks before he was sent to the front lines to retrieve wounded soldiers. When he returned to the States he hauled for Pet Milk for 10 years. In 1960, he and Arlene purchased a farm south of LaHarpe where they spent the rest of their years growing and tending crops and cattle.
Mr. Jones is survived by his son, Roger, and wife Susan, Iola, daughter, Regina Young and husband Guy; five grandchildren, Christopher Jones, Iola, Kelly Jones and wife Charity, Iola, Ryan Jones, Parsons, Jennifer Sprague and husband Brandon and Kristen Bevard; great-grandchildren, Breakin and Gage Jones, Iola; a sister, Betty Gillham, Fort Scott; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1992, his parents and three brothers, Howard, Donald and James.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at Highland Cemetery in Iola. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 U.S. 54, Iola.
