Virgel Paul Boyd, 96, Moran, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola.
He was born on Nov. 11, 1920, in Pittsburg, the son of Oscar and Rozena (Kline) Boyd. He attended school in Pittsburg. Virgel spent one year with the Civilian Conservation Corps, working in Wyoming and Idaho. He entered the U.S. Army in July 1942 and was trained at Camp Roberts, Calif. He served in the African Invasion where he was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart. He also served in Italy and the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. Virgel was united in marriage to Verla Lantz on Oct. 23, 1945, in Iola. They made their home in Iola and Bassett for several years, where Paul worked as a supply manager at Lehigh Portland Cement. In 1974 they moved to Gas where Paul enjoyed gardening, caring for dogs, raising fowl, white rabbits and livestock. In 1988 they moved to Moran, where he was a member of the American Legion. Paul was also a member of the V.F.W. in LaHarpe.
Virgel was preceded in death by his son, Tim Boyd, on May 31, 2014; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Boyd and Shelby Ray; parents, Oscar and Rozena Boyd; three brothers, Arthur, Harold and Norman; and three sisters, Nellie, Helen and an infant sister.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Verla Boyd, of the home; four grandchildren, Aaron Boyd and wife, Erin, Manhattan, Mont., Sarah Brown, Amarillo, Texas, Sybil Watson and husband Billy, Amarillo, Texas, and Rachel Boyd, Springfield, Mo.; nine great-grandchildren, Hannah, Isaac, Allison, Sophia, Michael, Marin, Keira, Ty and Wade; brother, Pete Boyd and wife Mary Ann, Arma; and several nieces and nephews.
