Solomon Aaron (Sol) Evans, 84, of Yates Center, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Windsor Place, Iola.
Sol was born on April 11, 1933, in Park Hill, Okla., to Carmon N. Evans and Ora F. Hensley Evans.
Sol was married to Barbara George in 1958 and they later divorced. He married Leinetta Ferree on June 26, 1988, in Yates Center.
Sol graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor of arts degree in 1960. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a master of science degree in 1964. Sol taught at Cherryvale High School for three years, Iola High School for three years, and Allen County Community College for 34 years. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a professional fraternity for men in education.
He was very involved in Lions Club activities, holding several offices at the local club level. He served as Lions District Governor, 1986-1987. He taught Sunday school for many years.
Sol served on the Iola City Commission. When he moved to Yates Center, Sol served on the Yates Center City Council.
One of his great loves was old-time southern mountain music. He loved to play this music, although not always well, on the banjo, mountain dulcimer, hammer dulcimer, auto-harp, and mandolin.
Sol is survived by his wife, Leinie, of the home; his son, Jon Evans and wife, Lori, of Moran; his brother, Ed Evans and wife, Patsy, El Paso, Ark.; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Sol was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Evans; and a sister, Norma Collier.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Yates Center United Methodist Church.
