Samuel R. Harris, 92, Kincaid, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015, at Allen County Regional Hospital, Iola.
He was born Feb. 6, 1923, at Geneva, the son of Stanley and Marie (Smith) Harris. At age 2, his family moved to the Diamond neighborhood north of LaHarpe. He graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1940 and Iola Junior College in 1943. He entered the military service in July 1943. Sam served 22 months in Europe with the Combat Engineers. After his discharge in January 1946, he attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1949.
On June 13, 1948, he married Evelyn Trine Bohm of Iola. They moved to Kincaid in 1949 and he taught vocational agriculture and was the FFA adviser in the high school for 18 years. He also taught and was the FFA adviser at Garnett High School for 19 years, retiring in 1986.
Sam was a member of Kincaid Methodist Church and the Kincaid V.F.W., and a charter member of the Lions Club. He was a farmer.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Alice Upshaw; and brother, Wayne Harris.
Sam is survived by his wife, Evelyn Harris; two daughters, Sandra Herynk and husband Steve, Adel, Iowa, and Jo Helen Sprague and husband Lonnie, Kincaid; one brother, Howard Harris, Bryan, Texas; sister, Margaret Thomas, Neosho, Mo.; four grandchildren, Bobbi Jo Perkins and husband Mike, Adel, Iowa, Jeri Lynn Gardner and husband Josh, Overland Park, Joe Sprague and wife Nikki, Kincaid; Justin Sprague and wife Jenna, Andover; seven great-grandchildren, Meg and Olivia Perkins; Dawson and Emma Gardner; Julianna and Shelby Sprague; and Sam Sprague.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Kincaid Cemetery. The family will greet friends at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kincaid High School Community Center, Kincaid Fair Association, or to the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church.
