Ruth Cora Ballenger, 94, of Wamego and formerly of Longton and Humboldt died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Westmoreland Community Care Home.

She was born Aug. 30, 1917, in Humboldt, S.D., to Bruce H. and Oma (Flesher) Crowell. She moved with her family to Kansas in 1928. She attended Oak Valley Grade School and living in the Longton area for 22 years and Humboldt for 45 years prior to moving to Wamego in 2006.

On Dec. 30, 1937, she married Joseph Oscar Ballenger. He preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and active in the community she lived in. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Longton for many years. She enjoyed meeting her friends for coffee, sewing, bowling and going on rides in their car. She enjoyed gardening and canning and was a good cook. She especially liked spending time with her grandchildren, taking them fishing and having them stay at her home in the summers.

Survivors include her two sons, Joseph “Pete” and his wife Janice, Overbrook, and Ronald “Lynn” and his wife, Cindy, Wamego; a son-in-law, Mike Weilert and his wife, Colleen, Wamego; a twin-brother, Glenn Crowell, Independence; nine grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.  

She was also preceded in death by her nine siblings, Charles, Olin, Lura, Max, Myra, Madge, Ralph, Vera, and Neil, her daughter, Myra “Colleen,” a daughter in-law, Ann Ballenger, and one stepgrandson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Longton. Burial will be in Longton Cemetery. 

She will lie in-state beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. A family visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.
