Raymond G. Shannon, 93, passed away at Medicalodges of Iola on March 15, 2025.
Raymond was born on July 15, 1931, the eldest of four children born to Gail and Mabel (Torkelson) Shannon in Hiawatha. He graduated high school from Atchison County Community High School with the class of 1947.
On July 23, 1950, Raymond married Wanda Dockweiler. Before making their home in Iola, Kansas, they lived in Junction City, Topeka, and Bolivar, Mo. Together, Raymond and Wanda raised their six children.
Raymond held a variety of jobs, many of which were in the restaurant and food service industry. Once he moved to Iola, Raymond started his own business in electrical, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning. After his retirement in 2000, Raymond and Wanda found themselves taking in stray cats and dogs. Their care and concern, along with that of other caring people in Allen County gave way to Allen County Animal Rescue Facility. He was also instrumental in the creation of the local dog park.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda; siblings, Gary Shannon and Michael Shannon; daughter, Susan Shannon; son, Doug Shannon; son-in-law, Dan Warren; and grandson, Josh Elliott.
He is survived by sister, Deanna (Larry) Sextro of Horton; children, Joyce Warren of Berryton, Judy (Tim) Baker of Iola, Patrick Shannon of Iola, and Peggy Voyles of Iola; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 U.S. 54, Iola.
Family will greet friends from 1 to 2 before the service. Memorials are suggested to Allen County Animal Rescue Facility (ACARF), and may be left in the care of the funeral home.
