Phyllis Ann Bass, 87, Leavenworth, died, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She was born Nov. 5, 1929, in Iola, the daughter of Vernon Henry and Gladys Lillian (Williams) Garner.
On Feb. 26, 1950, Phyllis married Wendell M. Bass Sr. He preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Vernon Garner Jr., Ronald Garner and Richard Garner.
She spent most of her days in Iola, where she was an advocate for Christ at Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church and did a lot for the community of Iola. Upon leaving Iola, Phyllis moved to Leavenworth, where she also contributed to the community. She was a strong member of Bethel A.M.E. Church and initiated the Richard Allen Cultural Center. Phyllis was also involved in getting the Buffalo Soldier Monument on Fort Leavenworth.
Phyllis leaves behind to mourn her three sons. Wendell (Angela) Bass Jr., San Diego, Calif., Dr. Elliott Bass, Junction City, and Ralph (Christe) Bass, Tulsa; a sister, Janice (Harold) Lane, Everest; eight grandchildren, Wendell III, Joanna, Michael, McKensie, Maryn, Matthew, Melanie and Michael; great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home, 4701 10th Ave., Leavenworth, KS.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 411 Kiowa, Leavenworth. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Iola. Memorials are suggested to the Sumner School Restoration of Pentecostal Church, Apostolic Church of God in Christ, 1701 5th Ave., Leavenworth.
