Nieta L. Cress, 92, of Humboldt, passed away Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at Heritage Health Care in Chanute.
Nieta was born Sept. 25, 1924, northeast of Iola, the daughter of Charles Delver and Ivah Ann (Matthews) Butler. She grew up on farms northeast of Iola and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1942. On Sept. 1, 1945, Nieta married Harlan H. Cress in Iola. They made their home on a farm west of Humboldt until moving into town in 1984. Harlan preceded her in death October 28, 2010.
Besides being a farm wife, Nieta worked as a bookkeeper for Service Co-op in Humboldt and in the laundry department at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
She was a member of Humboldt United Methodist Church and past member of South Logan E.H.U. She enjoyed dancing, crocheting and sewing.
Survivors include her three children: Don Cress and wife, Carol, of Humboldt, Carol Bauer and husband, Chris, of Humboldt, and Dan Cress and wife, Joan, of Oak Creek, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Kevin Cress of LaHarpe, Mary Ann Cunningham of Humboldt, Max Cress of Pittsburg, Scott Cress of Humboldt, Matthew Bauer of Collinsville, Ill., Mark Bauer of Wichita, Michael Bauer of Rockwall, Texas, Matthew Kozlowski of Bayview, Wis. and Sarah Torgersen of South Milwaukee, Wis.; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Walter Alva “Buddy” Butler.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Humboldt United Methodist Church, with visitation starting at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in DeWitt Cemetery west of Humboldt.
