Mary K. Heinz, 94, of Iola died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
She was born March 15, 1917, in Galesburg, Ill., to Earl and Margaret (Emery) Nelson. She grew up in Galesburg where she graduated from high school. The family moved to a farm north of Iola when she was 19. She completed her education at Iola Junior College.
On June 11, 1938, she married Elton Heinz in Garnett. They made their home in Allen County where they farmed and dairied south of Gas for many years. He died Sept. 8, 1987.
Besides farming, she worked at McAtee Nursing Home and later was a social worker for Community Action and Hope Unlimited. She enjoyed life and especially enjoyed going to sales and traveling.
She was a member of LaHarpe Christian Church and Loyal Neighbors Club.
She is survived by three children, Fred and his wife, Pat, Gakona, Alaska, Janet Heinz, Peculiar, Mo., and Mike and his wife, Gina, Carthage, Mo.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, William Heinz, and two brothers, Frederick and William Nelson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. The Rev. Steve Traw will officiate. Burial will be in Geneva Cemetery.
