Mary Frances Thummel, 80, of Iola died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.
She was born Jan. 31, 1931, in Piqua, to Bernard and Julia (Ulrich) Konen. She grew up in Piqua where she attended St. Martin’s Catholic School through the eighth grade. She graduated from Iola High School.
She was married to Charles Thummel. They had four children and later divorced.
She made her home in Piqua, Iola and Chanute most of her life. She worked for Custom Electronics in Chanute, Pinecrest Nursing Home in Humboldt as a nurse’s aide and at Walmart in Chanute until she retired 15 years ago.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Chanute. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, watching sports, especially University of Kansas basketball and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, Marsha Bogle and her husband, Mark, Chanute, Joni Thummel, Humboldt, Rodney Thummel and his wife, Kay, Yates Center, and Clifford Thummel and his wife, Tresha, Humboldt; a brother, Gerald Konen and his wife, Dorothy, Little River; 12 grandchildren, Heath Scheibmeir and his wife, Aurie, Zeb Scheibmeir, Erica Phillips and her husband, Brian, Jess Bogle, Megan Gann and her husband, Matt, Rebekah Thummel, Serah Thummel, Tim Thummel, Tabrenah Thummel, Mikal Larsen Berthot and Aaron Nietfeld; and 10 great-grandchildren, Eric Phillips, Daniel Scheibmeir, Corinne Scheibmeir, Kira Scheibmeir, Joseph Gann, Asia Larsen, Alec Berthot, Adrianne Morrison, Austin Nietfeld and Jade Nietfeld.
She was preceded in death by a grandson Joe Bogle, and brother, Robert (Butch) Konen.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.
Parish Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Piqua followed by a Mass at 10:30. The Rev. Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant. Inurnment will be in St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery in Piqua at a later date.
