Madalyn Mae Varnell, 77, Iola, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at Moran Manor in Moran.
She was born July 10, 1940, in Iola to Lola (Johnson) Holland. She graduated from Iola High School in 1958. After high school, she moved to Wichita, where she worked as a waitress and then assistant manager at Howard Johnson’s Motel in Wichita. Upon her retirement, she returned to Iola to care for her mother.
Madalyn enjoyed painting, listening to music and traveling. Among her greatest joys was spending time with her family, especially her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by two brothers, Roy Holland and wife Pam, Humboldt, and Roger Holland and wife Mindy, Iola; three sisters, Margie Masterson, Jacksonville, Fla., Linda Overton, Iola, and Connie Shetlar and husband Clyde, Moran, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeannene Gayle McClure, by a sister, Phyllis Cook, and a brother-in-law, Ed Masterson.
Her service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 U.S. 54, Iola. Visitation will be the evening prior from 6 to 8, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, Iola. Contributions in her memory are suggested to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
