Louise G. Lackey, 99, formerly of Iola, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at Newman Regional Health in Emporia.
Louise was born June 7, 1916, in Iola, the daughter of Morris and Catherine Mathilda (Schlick) Abts. She graduated from Iola High School in 1934 and worked as a bookkeeper for her father at Abts Auto Parts.
On June 16, 1939, Louise married W.B. “Bud” Lackey in Iola. They made their home in Iola except from 1949 to 1954 when they made their home in Oklahoma, Texas and Troy, Mo., following his career with the pipeline. In 1971, they owned and operated Iola Iron & Metal until they closed that and retired in 1984. Bud passed away Jan. 30, 1991. Louise moved to Emporia July 3, 2010.
She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and Altar Society and Ladies of Elks. Louise was an avid bowler and loved to dance. She also delivered meals-on-wheels for many years in Iola.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane Lackey-Barr and husband Jack, Kansas City, Mo., and Beth Wilson and husband Jesse, Emporia; one sister, Frances “Fritzi” Robinson, Overland Park; four grandchildren, Jackie Barr, Christine Johnson, Brent Torrens and Dalton Wilson; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Maurice Abts and sisters Mary C. Abts, Margaret Joan Scott and Maureen Abts.
The parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. Visitation will follow from 7:30 to 8:30 at St. John’s Parish Hall. The funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Catholic Church followed by burial in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
