Lelia G. “Granny” Damron, 75, Garnett, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at her home in Garnett.
She was born Dec. 23, 1941, in Iola. Lelia was the third of seven children born to Roy Vernon McHaley and Nellie Augusta (Ringer) McHaley. She grew up in the Iola area, attending school there. Lelia was united in marriage to Albert Wayne Damron on Aug. 19, 1964, in Iola, Kansas. Lelia lived in Idaho, Colorado and Texas, before living Pomona. She later moved to Garnett in 1994. Throughout working years she held a number of jobs that included working as a laborer for Allied Signal, Bendix King, H.D. Lee and Deluxe Laundry. Lelia enjoyed, camping, fishing, and playing bingo, but her greatest joy was spoiling her grandchildren.
Lelia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert Wayne Damron on Sept. 25, 2007; son, James Damron on Sept. 2, 2015; an infant daughter; two brothers, Clinton and Robert; three sisters, Shirley Gregg, Clara Nobles and Stella Diaz; and five grandchildren, Daniel Paul, Danny, J.W., Chrissa and Stephen.
She is survived by her caregiver of the last 18 years, Anita New and great-granddaughter, Kimmie Damron, of the home; her children, Debbie Mietchen and husband Jim, Baldwin, Wayne Wright and wife Judy, Marble Falls, Texas, Brenda Adams and husband Robert, Newton, Carl Damron and wife Candy, Garnett, Brian Damron, Kansas City, Mo., and Carla Stoy and Bob Quann, Garnett; one sister, Betty Diaz and husband Benny, Naples, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, Garnett. Burial will follow at the Garnett Cemetery.
