Joy L. Houk, 79, rural Moran, passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott.
Joy was born Nov. 23, 1935, east of Chanute, the daughter of Clarence and Helen Louise (Tennis) Rinehart. The family moved to a farm west of Humboldt where she attended Prairie Center School. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1954 and Iola Junior College in 1956. Joy worked for the Allen County Extension Office and McKean Feed Store in Iola.
On April 3, 1960, Joy married Harold W. Houk at the Humboldt United Methodist Church. They have always made their home and farmed west of Moran. She was the secretary at Marmaton Valley Elementary School from 1980 until she retired in 2008.
Joy was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church and was active in the Women’s Service there. She was also a member of the Sunshine Club, Daughters of the Nile and the Moran American Legion Auxiliary.
Harold W. Houk, her husband of 55 years, survives, as do a daughter, Brenda Armstrong and husband, Jim, Moran; one granddaughter, Jenni Armstrong, Moran; two stepgrandsons, J.D. Armstrong and Andrew Armstrong, both of Topeka; three brothers, Vaughn Rinehart and wife Margaret, Humboldt, Mark Rinehart, Independence, Mo., and Lyman Rinehart and wife Nanci, Goodyear, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Ann Houk, Moran; and aunts and uncle, Florence Carlburg, Wichta, Laurilla Tennis, Chanute, and Dean Tennis, Meade.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Richard Houk.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Moran United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Moran Cemtery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola.
