Joseph Michael Smith, Des Moines, Iowa, (formerly from Sun City West, Ariz., and Carlisle, Iowa) passed away Monday Feb. 25, 2019.
Joe was born in Eureka, to Albert Frances Smith Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Bohenick Smith. He grew up and graduated from high school in Iola.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Joe worked as electrician and was a member of the IBEW for 68 years. He retired from ABC Electric and LU347 in 1994. He enjoyed his numerous years of umpiring mens 16-inch slo-pitch and womens slo-pitch softball, and cherished the many friendships he made at these games. In 1997, he and his wife moved to Sun City West, where he enjoyed playing softball, working at the golf course and spending time in the nice warm sunshine.
Joe is survived by his wife Janice Smith, his daughter Lisa Smith, four sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
His parents and all 14 of his siblings preceded him in death.
No services are planned per Joes request; a burial is planned May 25 in Iola. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family or the Carlisle High School Alumni (in honor of Joe) for a scholarship.
