John William Zahm Jr., 77, passed away at 1:45 a.m., Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, at Stonecrest-Burlington Creek, Kansas City, Mo., following an illness.
Mr. Zahm was born June 23, 1940, in Hallowell. His parents were John Wm. Zahm Sr. and Mary Marie (Wiseman) Zahm.
He graduated from Columbus High School with the class of 1958. He then entered the U.S. Navy and was attached to the USS Holder. Upon his discharge, he attended barber school and worked at that trade throughout his adult life. He began barbering in Columbus in 1962 before moving to Iola in 1964 where he worked until his retirement in 1999.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, Iola. He also had been active in the Iola Jaycees, the Masonic Lodge No. 38 of Iola. He was a York Rite, and was a Shriner. He was an avid fisherman. Among his other hobbies and pastimes were building model airplanes, hunting arrowheads and collecting antique automobiles. He loved the game of KENO.
Surviving is one son, John Zahm III, Iola; three daughters, Julie Smith (husband, Glennard), Otis, Brenda Zahm, Kansas City, Mo., and Linda Stratton (friend, Tony Woo), Las Vegas; one brother, Clark Zahm, Columbus; sister Judy Moss, Las Vegas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Friday at Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus. Burial was in Park Cemetery, Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Humanity Health in care of the funeral home.
