John Altyn Mulkey, 86, Yates Center, passed away at his home on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017.
John was born Oct. 4, 1930, in Selma, to John Robert “Kenneth” Mulkey and Francis Marjorie (Burlingham) Mulkey. He attended grade schools in that area and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1948. He was married to Elizabeth Wylie on Sept. 22, 1958, and they became the parents of two daughters, Sandra and Cynthia. Later they were divorced. He was married three more times. Eva Conner and Ethel Barr both preceded him in death. On Oct. 4, 2012, he married Joyce McCormick of Yates Center. He served in the U.S. Navy; he was very proud of being a veteran. After returning home, he went to work as a pipeline welder and worked at this until he retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Cynthia Stranghoner, stepdaughter, Nancy Evans, and sister, Dorothy Elbrader.
John is survived by his wife Joyce, of the home; daughter, Sandra Sotomayor and husband Alex, Port Angeles, Wash.; six stepchildren, Peggy Marple and husband Jake, Iola, James Porter and wife Tammy, Yates Center, John Porter and wife Teresa, Derby, Jolene “Joy” Bedsole and husband Stephen, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jana Porter, Kansas City, Mo., and Joel Porter and wife Kiz, Yates Center; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 16 N. Buckeye, Iola. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Mildred. John will lie in state from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International and left in care of the funeral home.
