John E. Maier, 59, of Iola died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born June 15, 1951, in Iola, to John Henry and Norma Jean (Kunkler) Maier. He grew up in Iola and graduated from Iola High School in 1969. He attended Pittsburg State University where he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
On Oct. 1, 1971, he married Nancy McCrate in Iola. They made their home in Pittsburg until moving to Iola in 1978. They had three children before they divorced.
He worked as general manager at IMP Boats in Iola until it closed. He later worked as a case manager for Southeast Kansas Area Agency on Aging out of Chanute. He was a member of the Northern Cherokee Nation.
He is survived by three children, Ben and his wife, Cassandra, Brooklyn Center, Minn., Sean and his wife, Kelci, Iola, and Sarah, Lawrence; his mother, Jean, Iola; a brother, Bill, Iola; and a grandson, Lucas.
His father, John H., and an infant brother, Robert E., died earlier.
Cremation has taken place.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Nancy Maier, 202 S. Cottonwood St.
