Jo grew up in east Texas in the area where she was born. Her parents were sharecroppers. Near the beginning of World War II, they moved to Dallas and Jo graduated from high school and worked a variety of jobs until she met her husband, Roland M. Spillman. They were married in Dallas Dec. 18, 1945.

Jo had several children that didn’t survive. In 1961 she gave birth to her only surviving child, Mark Spillman.
In 1985 Rol retired from the pipeline and he and Jo farmed part time in the Moran area until they retired in 2005 and moved to Iola. Rol passed away in 2014. Jo had lived in Fort Scott at the Medicalodge care facility since that time.
