Dewey L. “Jim” “Cowboy” Lewis, 72, Elsmore, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at Windsor Place in Iola.
Jim was born Nov. 7, 1942, in Pineville, Mo., the son of Dewey and Elsie (Drake) Lewis. He grew up in the Pineville area.
On Dec. 23, 1961, Jim married Carlin Kay Schlessman at Tracy Church in Anderson, Mo. They made their home in Pineville until 1965, when they moved to Moran. In 1968, they moved to Elsmore. Jim worked for the Katy Railroad. In 1988, Union Pacific took over and he retired in 2000 due to health issues.
Jim was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Railroad Union, Elsmore Ruritan Club, Virginia Lodge of Masons in Savonburg, Mirza Shrine, Tri-County Shrine and the MG Shriner’s Club, and attended Elsmore United Methodist Church. He also played in the Senior Golf League Group at Cedarbrook in Iola.
His wife of 53 years, Kay, survives, as do three children and nine grandchildren, Doug Lewis and wife Susan, Moran, and their children, Tyler and Tanner; James Lewis and wife Carla, Cherokee, and their children, Kyle, Kaytlyn, Taylor and Chad; and Shannon Boyd and husband Kent, Moran, and their children, Kailey, Keagan and Kamryn; three siblings, Paul Lewis, Neosho, Mo., Dorothy Allgood and husband Ernie and Louise Schlessman, all of Pineville, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, David Lewis.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Moran United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Moran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Shriners Hospitals for Children may be left with the funeral home.
