Norma Jean Maier, 88, Iola, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in Iola.
She was born May 10, 1929, in Lamar, Mo., to Earl and Ruth (Kratz) Kunkler. She grew up in Lamar, and graduated from high school there. She married John H. Maier on Aug. 6, 1949. Together they made their home in Iola and raised their children. She served in the Boy Scouts, enjoyed gardening, and will be remembered for taking care of others. She loved the outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was diligent in keeping up with the news, reading many books, and was a proud Democrat. She will long be remembered for her delicious holiday dinners.
Jean is survived by a son, Bill Maier, Iola, a granddaughter, Sarah Maier, Lawrence, five grandsons, Benjamin Maier and wife Cassandra, Brooklyn Center, Minn., Sean Maier and wife Kelci, Iola, Josh Maier and wife Kristen, Iola, Shane Maier, Iola, and John Maier and wife Sarah, Lenexa; great-grandchildren, Lucas Maier and Kennedy and Elizabeth Maier; brothers, Russell Kunkler and Richard Kunkler; daughters-in-law Nancy Maier and Marilyn Maier, both of Iola; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Maier, in 2003, a son, John Edward, an infant son, Robert Eugene, and by her parents.
Services for Jean will be Saturday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with the funeral service at 10. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Iola. In light of Jean’s love of children, the family asks that memorials be sent to St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, for their Weekend Backpack Program.
