James A. Akers, 87, of Fort Scott died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at the Medicalodges in Fort Scott.
He was born at Fairmont, Mo., on May 10, 1923, to Henry W. and Lenora Akers. He attended grade school east of Humboldt at Maple Grove and high school in LaHarpe.
He spent most of his adult life in and out of Kansas City in the trucking business. He retired from Pipes Towing Service in 1987 and lived in Iola until failing health caused him to move to Fort Scott.
He is survived by a son, Jimmie; daughters, Marsha and Teri; stepchildren Pat Grimm, Barb Chandler, Debbie Coon, Marlene Braker, Lucinda Lonergan, Annette Kyser, Craig Carlson, Tammy Carlson and Tracy Altic; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Akers Nicholas.
His wife, Myrna Akers, daughter, Melody Perry, brothers, Walter and Kenneth Akers, and half brothers, John Loveland and Jewell Loveland, died earlier.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Way of Life Church, 2626 S. 65th, Kansas City, KS 66106.
