J.D. Durkin, 76, died Friday, April 2, 2010, in Brookside Manor in Overbrook.
He was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Humboldt, the son of John and Mona Willhite Durkin. He grew up in Humboldt and had lived in Carbondale since 1962.
He worked as an installer for AT&T for 38 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1956. He had served as mayor and city councilman for Carbondale, he was with the Carbondale Volunteer Fire Department for 46 years and was a First Responder for eight years. He was a member of Kiwanis, Carbondale Grange and Community United Church of Christ. He was on the Osage County election board, zoning committee and was a Boy Scout leader and baseball coach.
On May 31, 1957, he married LaVaughn Hudson in Miami, Okla.
He is survived by his wife; six children, Vicki Doze and her husband, Kent, Carbondale, Coleen Remington and her husband, Lonnie, Topeka, Darrell Kent and his wife, Diana, Thornton, Colo., Norman Kent, Humble, Texas, David Durkin and his wife, Brenda, and Tammy Marstall and the late Fred Marstall, Carbondale; two brothers, Robert, Springfield, Mo., and Raymond, Osage City; three sisters, Mary Ann Mueller, Humboldt, Nancy Chandler, Chanute, and Phyllis Caler, Iola; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Community United Church of Christ in Carbondale. Burial will be in Carbondale Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
