Homer D. Payne, 81, of Iola, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, at Heritage Health Care in Chanute.
Homer was born April 29, 1935, in rural LaHarpe, the son of George Albert and Hazel (Colgin) Payne. The family moved from LaHarpe to a farm southwest of Colony where he grew up. He served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves.
On July 1, 1961, Homer married Marilyn E. Marple in Garnett. They have always made their home in Iola. He was maintenance supervisor for the Allen County Public Works Department for over 39 years.
Homer enjoyed tinkering in the garage and spending time with his family and grandkids.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Marilyn; two sons, Tim Payne and wife Karen and Craig Payne and wife Patricia, all of Iola; five grandchildren, Kayla Gallagher, Taylor Payne, Ryan Payne, Audrey Appling and Carlie Payne; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Appling; and three siblings, Madge Leatherman, Chanute, Floyd Payne, Florida, and Harold Payne and wife Patsy, Colony.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl, George Jr. and Robert Payne, and sister, Alberta Crone.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or ACARF (Allen County Animal Rescue Facility) and may be left with the funeral home.
