Herman A. Nilges, 85, Garnett, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at St. Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park.
He was born July 28, 1926, in Anderson County, near Scipio, the son of Samuel and Mary (Peine) Nilges. He grew up and attended school in Anderson County, living there all of his life except for two years in Gypsum. As a young man he farmed and hauled milk with his brother. Nilges then worked for Anderson County as a truck driver for 28 years, retiring in 1991. After retiring, he mowed yards and enjoyed gardening.
He was married to Lois Blubaugh on Dec. 20, 1949, in Iola. This union was blessed with three children.
Nilges enjoyed fishing, hunting and trap shooting, as well as his bird dogs. He traveled to shooting contests, and was a member of the Garnett Gun Club. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Herman is survived by his wife, Lois Nilges, of the home; his son, Mike Nilges and wife Heather, Garnett; two daughters, Janette Bilderback and husband David, Garnett, and Debbie Graue and husband Ted Belt, Overland Park; two brothers, Fred, Emporia, and Bernie and his wife Norma Jean, Iola; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett. Burial will follow in Garnett Cemetery.
