Harold D. Yokum, 90, of Iola died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Iola Nursing Center.
He was born May 4, 1920, in Colony, to Ernst D. and Nelle Mary (Hoffmeier) Yokum. He graduated from Colony High School in 1938 and attended Kansas State University before joining the military.
On Nov. 10, 1943, he married Betty I. Waugh in Oakland, Calif. After serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II, he graduated from the Williams School of Mortuary Science.
The couple made their home in Iola and joined David C. Waugh and Thomas O. Waugh in the operation of Waugh Funeral Home. He and his wife eventually became owners of the family business and owned and operated Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home until he retired in 1982.
He especially enjoyed fishing and gardening.
His memberships include Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, all Iola Masonic bodies and Mirza Temple. He served a number of years on the Iola Public Library Board and Deer Creek Watershed Board and was a 50-year member of Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association.
He is survived by his wife of the home; three children, David and his wife, Nancy, Iola, Tom and his wife, Beverly, Waverly, and Mary Mohr and her husband, Gene, Rose Hill; a brother-in-law, Rollin Strickler, Colony; seven grandchildren, David, Bryan and Rebecca Mohr, Thomas Yokum and his wife, Melanie, Ben Yokum, Lorrie Bell and her husband, Seth, and Glenna Yokum; and two great-grandchildren, Owen Yokum and Sage Bell.
A brother, Dale, and a sister, Ina Strickler, died earlier.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
