Grace Emily Elmore, 80, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Windsor Place.
She was born July 14, 1930, in Big Bo, Kan., the daughter of Christian Henry and Mamie Lula Pearl Scheikhard. She lost her mother early in life when Lula died of dust pneumonia. She was placed in foster care at the age of 7, where she endured several difficult years apart from her siblings. At 13, she was accepted as a member of the Clemons family on a chicken farm in Erie.
She married Carl Elmore at 18. She worked at Miller Dress Factory and Kansas Aluminum when she wasn’t gardening. She canned much of her produce to feed her children and loved animals, reading, bowling and woodworking. She was soft-spoken and caring and taught her children to treat others as they wished to be treated.
She is survived by a sister, Lucy Blair, Delta, Colo.; four daughters, Peggy Luken and her husband, Kenny, Gas, Vicky Taber and her husband, Paul, Reading, Nancy Jones, Newton, and Judy Quinlain and her husband, Rick, Cincinnati, Ohio; two sons, Timmy, Osage, and Carey and his wife, Christine, El Dorado. She was grandmother to 21, great-grandmother to 23 and great-great-grandmother to three.
She will meet two children in heaven, Danny Dean and Betty Jean, three grandchildren,  and six sisters and brothers, Della, Pauline, Esther, Lawrence, Albert and William.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Iola. The Rev. David McGullion will officiate. Burial will follow at Iola Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chap-el.
Memorials  may made to the Windsor Place fund-raiser for residents’ activities and left with the funeral home, which is in charge of the arrangements.
