Glen Edwin Gilpin, 88, of Emporia died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
He was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Centerville, to Claude and Helen McGrew Gilpin. He was the brother of the late Howard Gilpin of Iola.
He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Kansas and started a general contracting business in Emporia. He retired in 1988. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as a Merchant Marine. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, past president and member of Kansas Contractors and the Kansas Asphalt Paving Association, Sigma Chi fraternity, Emporia Chamber of Commerce, Emporia Enterprises and the “Rusty Zippers” coffee club.
He married Norma Mendenhall in Emporia on June 17, 1951.
She survives, as does a son, Glen E. II, Emporia; a daughter, Cynthia Hermes, Topeka; grandchildren, Lauren and Cassie Hermes, Topeka, Anita and Bob Strohm, Kansas City, Mo., and Megan Gilpin, New York, N.Y.; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Rose Strohm, Kansas City, Mo.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Emporia with the Rev. Kelly Lackey, rector of the church, officiating. Interment will be in St. Andrew’s Church Yard, behind the church.
