Gertrude “Gertie” Pauline Hicks Schubert died Dec. 25, 2010.
She was born July 28, 1918, in Iola, the only child of Clayton and Lona Hicks, and was raised in Iola and other small towns in Allen County.
After graduating from high school, she earned a teaching certificate from Iola Junior College. One of her first teaching assignments was in a one-room Allen County school where she started the fire each morning.
She taught music at Ramona High school, where in 1944 she met Henry “Hank” Schubert. They married May 27, 1945, and had two sons, Keith and Gary. She taught an additional 30 years in the Ramona and Centre school districts.
In May 2004 the Schuberts moved to Greeley, Colo., to be closer to their sons. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before he died in September of 2005.
Schubert loved to read, especially American history. She often imagined herself crossing the Great Plains and mountains in a covered wagon. She was an avid photographer and loved the mountains.
She was an accomplished pianist and organist and played for many weddings and funerals over 30 years at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Each Christmas season, she would prepare Christmas programs for the school and church. She enjoyed them immensely and family members said it was fitting she died on Christmas day.
She is survived by her sons, Keith and his wife Vicki and Gary and his wife Carol; four grandchildren, Kimberly and husband Adam, Micah and wife Cara, Tara and husband Kelly and Kristina and fiance LeeRoy; seven great-grandchildren, Logan, Tasia, Kaela, Malachi, Jenna, Acacia and Koy.
Cards and memorials may be sent to Keith Schubert, 3915 S. Telluride Ct., Aurora, CO 80013. Memorial gifts will be used to place a bench at the Lewis Cemetery in Ramona.
