George W. Varner, 89, Poplar Bluff, Mo., passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Westwood Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Varner, the son of the late Henry and Alta Willsey Varner, was born Jan. 20, 1927 in Rest, Kan. He attended Benedict High School in Kansas and served as an elder at Le Roy Christian Church. Mr. Varner proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a retired postmaster. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. Mr. Varner enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
On Oct. 13, 1950, he married Zelda Mae Weber in Yates Center. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include four children, Paul (Toni) Varner of Poplar Bluff, Mary (Sonny) Woollard of Quincy, Ill., Will (Bobby) Varner of Dallas and Dan (Neva) Varner of Topeka; a brother, Charles (Dorothy) Varner of Benedict; and a sister, Helen (Herman) Troutman of Texas City, Texas.
A sister, Hazel VanMatre, also preceded Mr. Varner in death.
A Celebration of Life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of Le Roy. A graveside service with inurnment of ashes will follow at 1 p.m. at High Prairie Cemetery of Altoona.
Van Arsdale Funeral Home of Le Roy is in charge of local arrangements.
