 Gene M. Wilmoth, 79, of Gardner died at his home on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. 

 Gene was born on July 6, 1932, in Colony, to Avery and Agnes (Houlton) Wilmoth. He grew up on the family farm in Iola and graduated from Iola High School in 1950. He graduated from Allen Community College and Pittsburg State University. Gene served two years in the U.S. Army. 

On July 28, 1956, Gene married Dorothy Matthews in Iola. In 1957 they moved to Gardner to begin his career in education. He served the Gardner Edgerton School District for 37 years as an educational leader, teacher and coach. Gene continued to work on a part-time basis until his death. He was a member of the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and numerous civic and educational organizations throughout his life.

 Gene enjoyed time with his family and friends, raising cattle on the family farm and gardening. Gene will be remembered for his integrity, discipline and most of all the many lives he touched during his years in education.

He is survived by his children, Janet and her husband, Les Tirschel, Odessa, Mo., and Mark and his wife, Kathy Wilmoth, Gardner; granddaughters, Kaitlin and Lindsey Wilmoth; a sister, Mary Dickey, and a brother, Don, both of Iola.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 2004. 

Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Monday with a Rosary at 10:15 a.m. and an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial, all at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main, Gardner. Burial follows at Gardner Cemetery.
